New iOS & Mobile Devices from Apple

I'm only going to deal and detail the mobile devices that business will be interested in here, so I won't be talking about the iPod Touch, Shuffle or the Nano - these all have been updated (and the Classic still remains in the mix).

So - What have Apple done? Well, iPhone 5 has arrived, it's the first major change to the iPhone in 2 years - as it's now got a 4" screen - other upgrades mean it's faster, more powerful and has an entirely new design - gone is the glass back to be replaced with a single metal frame and back.

The new iPhone is a big jump, as it also has LTE (4G) - This means that your iPhone (on Optus or Telstra) will almost certainly be able to browse the internet and download files faster than your home internet.

And in the last month Apple also decided to add a new device to their iOS mobile platform, the iPad Mini - 7.9" screen. It is available now in stores and online.

New Computer Updates From Apple

So it's been a wee while since we last updated this, so I'm going to fly through some catchups from Apple that may interest you.

We've now got OS X 10.8.3 - Mountain Lion. It's a further refinement on OS X, it is a very worthwhile improvment on 10.7 if you are looking to upgrade.

To go with the new OS we've got a whole new range of computers from Apple as well, 13" and 15" Macbook Pro's with Retina displays - easily the best quality display available on any screen.

The Mac Mini also features a new option - FusionDrive - I'll post about that in a new post shortly.

We have had a minor upgrade done to the Mac Pro (but rumours are abound that an update to these is due in the first quarter of next year).

Apple releases 10.7.4 Lion

Apple released 10.7.4 today. Issue resolved are:

• Resolve an issue in which the "Reopen windows when logging back in" setting is always enabled.

• Improve compatibility with certain British third-party USB keyboards.

• Addresses permission issues that may be caused if you use the Get Info inspector function "Apply to enclosed items…" on your home directory. For more information, see this article.

• Improve Internet sharing of PPPoE connections.

• Improve using a proxy auto-configuration (PAC) file.

• Address an issue that may prevent files from being saved to an SMB server.

• Improve printing to an SMB print queue.

• Improve performance when connecting to a WebDAV server.

• Enable automatic login for NIS accounts.

• Include RAW image compatibility for additional digital cameras.

• Improve the reliability of binding and logging into Active Directory accounts.

• The OS X Lion v10.7.4 Update includes Safari 5.1.6, which contains stability improvements.

Office 2011 Service Pack 2 released

Microsoft released Service Pack 2 for Office 2011 today.From the Mactopia website:

We appreciated your feedback! As the newest member of the Office for Mac family, Outlook 2011 continues to get the most requests from consumers and businesses alike; therefore, our top priority for this release was Outlook, and this service pack resolves many of the most common requests. The more notable Outlook enhancements include:

• Sync performance with Exchange server,
• Performance improvements while deleting multiple items,
• Displaying email message content, and sending email.

Outlook performance is also improved in IMAP account sync and the database rebuild utility. New capabilities include:
• Scheduling resources in the calendar,
• Distribution list expansion,
• Day number display in the calendar.

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint have improved performance with additional modest improvements. For example, we updated PowerPoint to take advantage of full screen view in Lion, and we improved grammar checkers for Italian and German languages. We also made it easier to work with Office documents on SkyDrive and addressed several smaller issues in response to your feedback.
